The instinct with a first humidor is to fill it with variety — one of everything, a sampler of the famous names. It is the wrong instinct, and it costs more than it looks.

You cannot learn from one

A cigar is not consistent across a box, a season, or a year. Smoking one stick tells you what that stick was like on that night, with that drink, in that weather. Smoking five over two months tells you what the cigar is.

The rest problem

Cigars shipped this week are not the cigars they will be in six months. A single bought and smoked immediately is a snapshot of a cigar in transit. Buying five gives you the option of waiting — which is the whole reason a humidor exists.

What to actually do

Pick two lines that people whose taste you trust keep returning to. Buy five of each. Smoke one immediately, one a month later, and leave the rest. Log all of it, because in six months you will not remember.
